:
Support for plantation in and around Chandaka Damapara Wild life Sanctuary
Project Description
:
Chandaka Dampada forest, near Bhubaneswar represents the north eastern limits of eastern ghats forest & Central Indian Elephant range. Govt of Odisha declared major forest area of this division i.e 193.39 Sq.km as Chandaka Damapada Wild Life Sanctuary for the purpose of protecting, propagating and developing wildlife due to its ecological, faunal, floral geo-morphological and zoological significance. The forest acts as carbon sink of Bhubaneswar & Cuttack cities and Khordha, Jatni & Banki urban areas. The areas and the surrounding areas are thickly populated. Rapid urbanization causing adverse impact on the eco-system of the sanctuary and wild life. Further large number of trees have been uprooted & damaged due to extremely severe cyclonic storm Fani on 3rd May 2019. Thus the project was taken up as an ameliorative measure to address climate change. Under the project 60 thousand seedlings are planned to be planted in block model and maintained for four years to restore the degraded forest area with a financial implication of Rs 351.94 lakhs. The plantation of indigenous plants includes plantation of Sisoo, Gambhari, Bamboo, Jamu, Anla, Tentuli, Neem, Arjuna, Bahada, Sirisha, Kangada, Harida, Barakoli, Panas, Mango, banyan, etc. to restore the green coverage.
