Project Description
:
The overall objective of this project is to facilitate the communities of 6 Gram Panchayats of Lanjigarh block to become Open Defecation Free (ODF) on a sustainable basis. For this, VL is working with Feedback Foundation (FF) as implementation partner to help bring about collective behavioral change towards existing practice of open defecation amongst these communities. In order to achieve results on the ground, we are using the Community Approaches to Sanitation (CAS), which is a hybrid version of Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) approach in creating the ODF communities. And in order to sustain such behaviour change, capacity building events such as sensitization / orientation workshops at state / district / division levels, TOT workshops at state / district levels, TOM workshops at block levels will be conducted apart from building/repairing toilets. The key principles of the Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Approach are establishing appropriate institutional frameworks, giving local governments a central role in scaling up and sustainability, using an all stakeholder inclusive approach that focuses on villages, not households, motivating natural village leaders to lead community mobilization in their village, promoting low dependency on external subsidy, focusing on elimination of open defecation, leading to acceptance of locally available, accessible, affordable, innovative and customizable technologies, igniting behavior change - sustainable, community monitored, focused on outcomes and promoting the availability of sanitary materials and allowing private suppliers to respond to the demand.
